Started At The Bottom

One of the questions I get asked all the time is how I became so successful in tennis.  There is a simple answer and a not-so-simple answer. I will start with the simple answer.

  • Get Oracene Price and Richard Williams to be your mom and Dad
  • Work your butt off and you even get to enjoy that most of the time
  • Lift the trophy and show those pearly whites!

If only it were that simple! And clearly there are many champion athletes, so you don’t really have to have my mom and dad, promise :-).

But in all seriousness, one thing that all champions in life have in common is that they started at the bottom. No one started out great, and I think that is what people forget. In order to be successful, there is a lot of hard work, dedication and sacrifice that goes into it.  You are going to spend time when you are not very good and you have to learn the ropes, and that takes time. That is why I always suggest that whatever you pursue, make sure it's something you love so you can enjoy the battle, because that is what it is, a battle.  But if it's something you love, then it's easy to enjoy putting the work into it.

I love what I do. I love tennis. I breathe tennis. I don’t mind the work. I love the work because it makes me confident and I feel prepared and strong.

So parents, how do you get your kids great at sport? Start them at the beginning.  That’s where we all start. Young folks, enjoy putting the work in.  I promise you it will change your life on and off of the practice court or field. You will learn lessons you will use your whole life!  And don’t forget to enjoy it!

As for me, I am currently obsessed with table tennis. I spent 3 hours in a hot garage playing this weekend and it seemed like 30 minutes. I love it. I love drilling. I don’t mind the work. So I guess I will be playing two sports at the 2016 Olympics! Stay tuned!

Enjoy the battle while you Look Good and Play Well!

I have to say that I LOVE TENNIS! I was introduced to it at the age of 12, but I loved basketball at that time. Since I have become a mother, I watch it religiously and wished I would have pursued it! Now that I am a mother, I have a daughter, Maliya who asks me everyday to let her play tennis.  She only asks because I watch it all the time. To get my point across, I love you and Serena’s story! It is so inspiring and I feel like that is what makes younger kids want to be better. The image is just so remarkable because you two changed tennis and young minorities outlook on becoming champions on and off the courts. Since I do watch you and Serena all the time, I have a suggestion. I don’t know what goes into creating a brand but you and Serena should do a racket brand and call it VerSus. The logo could be VS for Venus and Serena. I think it would be a big hit and I would love to see you two do something like that! My daughter would be the first to get it! Its just a suggestion but I love everything you two do and stand for so its just another suggestion that I feel could be marketable. Venus, you have already changed so much for women and tennis; this could be the next big thing! Much love, Krystal.

Hi Venus, you are such an inspiration!  As long as I can get out on the court and ” shut ‘em down” I will always continue to watch your matches particularly, against Serena.  You have such a wonderful sister love for Serena (thank your parents) that I could see how difficult it was to be her rival in some of those exhilarating matches.  Every time I watch your matches before I play my matches, I get goose bumps.  Then, my “inner Venus and Serena” take over. Like you, it’s all mental from there.  Continued success with the EleVen line, table tennis; your charities.Happy Holidays to your family and a special thanks to Kelly E. Carter, writer extraordinaire.

Peace, Love and Prosperity,

Sabrina G.

This picture is just a few years prior to you joining me at the City of West Palm Beach’s program finale for the City’s National Junior Tennis League.  You and Serena joined us, along with your dad, who spoke at our awards ceremony. You and Serena played a point against EVERY child in attendance, an expereince my daughter still talks about 20 years later!

Please check out the website of a nonprofit I currently work with….wwwProjectZawadi.org.  We’re doing some really good things in the area of education for the underprivledged in Tanzania.
